What are the Current Trends in the Energy Sector? EXXETA at the BDEW Congress

The German Association of Energy and Water Industries (Bundesverband der Energie- und Wasserwirtschaft – BDEW) is the most important lobby group representing the interests of energy companies to policymakers and the general public in Germany. This year’s BDEW Congress adopted the theme of “Change: new ideas, new formats”.

EXXETA was present at the Congress to discuss the 3 “D” challenges for electricity and gas suppliers.

Decarbonisation

Coal is to be fully phased out by 2050. Natural gas, which is more efficient and more climate-friendly than coal, is set to act as a bridging technology counterbalancing intermittent renewable energy sources and making an important contribution towards a secure energy supply.

Decentralisation

The energy market used to be dominated by just a few major energy companies. With the growth of renewable energy, new players have been entering the market. This has led to an increasing complexity in market communication and market control which can only be managed with the help of modern digital systems.

Digitization

To cope with these changes and advances in technology, electricity and gas suppliers need to undergo a process of digital transformation. Adopting a digitization strategy not only involves an extension of market communication but also networking and connections to a large variety of different platforms to secure and optimise digital interfaces. Consideration also needs to be given to a rapid digitization of internal processes and the handling of big data for the efficient administration and control of the huge volume of data which is growing at an exponential rate. With this in mind, it is clear that data protection and IT security are of crucial importance for companies.

Progressive solutions are needed to meet these challenges. The promotion of innovation is becoming an important driver of corporate culture and changes existing business models. If you want to successfully manage these changes, you clearly need digital skills. We have already been able to demonstrate our specialist digital expertise on a variety of projects and support companies on their way into the digital age.

If you are looking for ideas on how to bring digitization to your energy company or need support in drafting a digitization strategy, please contact our experts at energy@EXXETA.com.
